Between the 5th and 11th July, we had a group of 8 walkers on the splendidly wild and lonely coastal path between Alnmouth in Northumberland an St Abbs in Berwickshire. Despite its remoteness, this coast is dotted with beautifully unspoilt villages, such as Craster, Low Newton by the Sea (with its fantastic little pub), Bamburgh, Burnmouth, Eyemouth and St Abbs.
This stretch of coast also has some splendid castles, such as Dunstanburgh and Bamburgh (pictured above), as well as the fortified old border town of Berwick. Berwick, at the mouth of the Tweed, has been in both England and Scotland during its turbulent history. At the moment it is in England but leans toward Scotland.
The walk ends at stunning St Abbs Head - definitely a case of saving the best 'til last.

Coming from the Texas hill country I thought putting two coastal paths together was extra special! Walking along the gentle undulating east coast for 7 days was pure joy! In fact this is one trip that anyone can do rain or shine while admiring the coastline. 'Footpath' continues to shine with providing a fantastic guide and placing our start point in Berwick. Superb location with great restaurants, pubs and b&b's. Our last day was particularly memorable in St Abbs; a place everyone should see before they die! Enough said.
Having now had one day back at work the holiday is receding fast but I thought that I would drop you a line to say how excellent it was. It was a good group and Graeme had an appropriately light touch. The walking gave me ample opportunity to paddle and there were tea shops and ice cream regularly available along the way. If one goes to the seaside what more can one ask?
It goes without saying that the views were spectacular
The whole experience was very enjoyable and - as usual - well organised. Berwick is an interesting place to have as a base and The Barrels (real ale) pub is "interesting"!
The ending of the holiday coincided with the the Berwick jazz festival and there was no better way to end.
I am currently scouring my brochure to see when the next holiday will be!
