RSPB Birdwatch
On Saturday the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) held their garden bird survey.
Participants were required to observe their gardens for one hour during the day and list all of the species of wild birds which visited and the maximum numbers of each species observed at any one time.
This survey was open to everyone, not just RSPB members. It was wonderful to have an hour during which your sole task was to watch your garden and take note of what was going on. Thankfully, on Salisbury Plain at least, the day was blessed with good weather.
We saw fifteen species including several species of tit and finch and more exotic, we saw a nuthatch and a spotted woodpecker. For good measure we even received a visit from a beautiful cock pheasant!
Thank goodness the survey was on Saturday and not today as the rain pours down and the wind moans around the chimney we wouldn't have seen species one! This January has certainly left us in no doubt as to who is in charge - and it's not mankind.....
